Troy Junker is a Canadian Métis rapper harnessing his idiosyncratic upbringing into his music. Born in Regina, SK and having lived in Jacksonville, Florida and spending most of his upbringing in the small town of Prince Albert, SK, Troy’s path is one that is truly unique. Influenced by great lyricists such as J Cole, Nipsey Hussle and Mac Miller, Troy has always had a love for the stories being told in the songs, which led him to enroll in a song writing program at the University of Saskatchewan.
When it comes to lyrical flow, Junker shape shifts between theme and tone delivering uplifting bangers for fun and slower tracks with thoughtful message. His early credentials include collaborating with XO/RocNation artist Belly on his former Electro-hop group Fresh City’s single, To The Floor, and opening for acts like LMFAO, Mariana's Trench, and Swollen Members.
Troy was a high school dropout who could foresee that he was headed down the wrong path. He decided it was best to change his lifestyle and had the opportunity to become a Uranium miner to fund his musical passion. Flown in and out of Cigar Lake, SK on a weekly basis, Troy would trade 80-hour work weeks for a week off for nearly three nears. On his week off, he would travel North America to record, network and educate himself with exotic music culture. In 2013, he travelled to his old home of Jacksonville, Florida to record and film sunny visuals for his debut single titled, Life's Good.
After three years of mining, Troy made the decision to follow with his musical passion and parted ways with what some would call a lifelong career and moved to Oshawa, ON. It’s here that he enrolled and achieved an honour-roll status in the Music Business Management at Durham College. Close to the epicentre of the Canadian music industry of Toronto, this gave Troy the easy accessibility to the largest city in Canada.
Throughout his time at the Durham college, Troy released two EPs and went on to play local college events and campus house parties. In his first year of college, he released his first solo EP, Time Capsule. The project is best described as a mixture of cloud rap and boom bap hip hop, laced with dreamy samples with stories from his Saskatchewan upbringing.
A year later, Junker followed up with his second project, Trilly Madison, which was a heavily sampled mixtape with a fun edge. The Trilly Madison album cover can be best described by Troy, "I was going back to school about a 10-minute drive from the mansion where they filmed, Billy Madison. Growing up, it was one of my favourite movies and since I was going back to school, I thought Troy + Billy = Trilly, which is also a play on the Houston hip-hop word, Trill. I knew it was a fit because making the project was a blast. So I pulled the trigger and got cover art done, real nice and slick like a modern Billy Madison, I even got the penguin added in the artwork to drive the bus”.
A week before graduating college, Troy was hired by a management company/record label to assist with marketing and distributing a few of Canada’s most influential musicians. While learning the ins and out of the music industry for a full-time job, this only set up Troy for more success before debuting his new music video, One Wish. While being interviewed by Canadian Beats, Troy said, “the song and video reflects how materialism isn’t everything. Even though you may think items will fix your problems – that’s not always the case. The song is for my friends and family who are searching for hope. I hope their wishes come true and if I had one wish, I’d give it to them.”
Troy closed out 2019 by being featured in an Indigenous Song writing camp, where he had a helping hand in creating, So Close by The Wolf Den which charted at #5 on Sirius XM’s Indigenous Music Countdown and released his animalistic banger, In The Jungle, which has garnered over 15,000 streams on Spotify. 2020 will be a busy year for Troy as he gears up to release a new project titled, The Path.
